Adaptive Approximation of Curves
We propose adaptive multiscale refinement algorithms for approximating and encoding curves by polygonal curves. We establish rates of approximation of these algorithms in the Hausdorff metric. For example, we show that under the mere assumption that the original curve has finite length then the first of these algorithms gives a rate of convergence O(1/n) where n is the number of vertices of the...
متن کاملNormal Multiresolution Approximation of Curves
ABSTRACT. A multiresolution analysis of a curve is normal if each wavelet detail vector with respect to a certain subdivision scheme lies in the local normal direction. In this paper we study properties such as regularity, convergence, and stability of a normal multiresolution analysis. In particular we show that these properties critically depend on the underlying subdivision scheme and that i...
متن کاملAsymptotic Approximation of Convex Curves
L. Fejes Tóth gave asymptotic formulae as n → ∞ for the distance between a smooth convex disc and its best approximating inscribed or circumscribed polygons with at most n vertices, where the distance is in the sense of the symmetric difference metric. In this paper these formulae are extended by specifying the second terms of the asymptotic expansions. Tools are from affine differential geometry.
متن کاملHigh order approximation of rational curves by polynomial curves
We show that many rational parametric curves can be interpolated, in a Hermite sense, by polynomial curves whose degree, relative to the number of data being interpolated, is lower than usual. The construction unifies and generalizes the families of circle and conic approximations of Lyche and Mørken and the author in which the approximation order is twice the degree of the polynomial.
متن کاملDiophantine Approximation and Algebraic Curves
The first topic of the workshop, Diophantine approximation, has at its core the study of rational numbers which closely approximate a given real number. This topic has an ancient history, going back at least to the first rational approximations for π. The adjective Diophantine comes from the third century Hellenistic mathematician Diophantus, who wrote an influential text solving various equati...
